Dear Ferns of our Forest

As we step towards the Beginning of Autumn (立秋) – Aug.7th – Aug.21st, we find ourselves in the golden pause between summer’s heat and autumn’s cool breath. In Chinese Medicine, this is late summer—a short, sweet season tied to the Earth element. It’s a time when life slows down, light softens, and the world wears a warm glow.

In this in-between space, we are invited to ground, nourish, and gather our inner harvest. Think of it as nature’s gentle reminder to savor, center, and prepare for the quieter months ahead.

This month, let’s explore how the SPINE framework can guide us through this seasonal threshold—making room for reflection, nourishment, and gratitude before autumn takes her seat.

Beginning of Autumn – 立秋 – Aug. 7th–Aug. 21st

S – Space
The Earth pauses between summer’s peak and autumn’s cool breath. This is a moment to slow your own rhythm, creating space to notice the golden light and gentle stillness.
Tip: Take 5–10 minutes daily to sit outside in the golden light—no phone, no rush.

P – Physical Body
Late summer nurtures digestion and grounding. In Chinese Medicine, it’s linked to the Earth element—your center of nourishment. Favor warm, simple meals and mindful movement that roots you.
Tip: Choose warm, grounding foods like roasted squash, sweet potatoes, and millet to support digestion.

I – Intention
Set the tone for autumn by tending to your inner harvest. Ask: What do I want to carry forward into the cooler months?
Tip: Write down one quality or habit from summer you want to carry into autumn.

N – Nature & Nutrition
Step outside and witness fields, trees, and skies touched with gold. Eat seasonally—sweet corn, squash, millet, and juicy fruits—to harmonize with the Earth’s late-summer energy.
Tip: Walk barefoot on grass or earth to reconnect with the season’s grounding energy.

E – Emotions
This time calls for savoring and gratitude. Let your heart rest in appreciation, gathering warmth for the season ahead.
Tip: Practice a short gratitude ritual—three things you appreciate each evening.

Late summer is brief—a golden threshold. Walk it slowly. Savor every last drop of sunlight before autumn takes her seat.
