Dear Ferns of the Forest,

As we enter End of Heat (处暑), the first solar term of autumn, nature begins her gentle shift from yang (active, outward energy) to yin (cool, inward energy). Days grow softer, seeds grow heavy, and the Earth’s aromas turn rich and grounding. In Chinese Medicine, this is a time to protect the body from dryness, nourish the spirit, and prepare for the quieter months ahead.

Through the SPINE Academia—Space, Physical Body, Intention, Nature & Nutrition, Emotions—we can move gracefully with the season: creating space for rest, choosing moistening foods like pears and squash, setting gentle intentions, connecting with the harvest around us, and letting gratitude deepen.

This is the moment to slow your pace, savor the abundance, and tend to the roots that will carry you through autumn.

End of Heat – 处暑

S – Space
Pause in the cooling air,
let your breath grow slower,
welcome the hush before autumn.

P – Physical Body
Sip warm teas,
eat moist fruits and tender squash
to guard against dryness.

I – Intention
Choose one habit to carry
from the fire of summer
into the calm of fall.

N – Nature & Nutrition
Walk where seeds grow heavy,
breathe in the Earth’s deep scent,
honor the harvest.

E – Emotions
Let gratitude settle in your chest,
like a seed tucked safely in soil,
ready to rest and grow.
